October Member Meeting

RMBS October 18th General Member Meeting is “Stitch, Bead & Share” – bring items you are working on, share ideas with others, and bring items to donate to “Beads of Courage. We will be electing officers at this meeting as well. Voting is in person by paper ballot so please be sure to attend and vote, Bring a piece of completed jewelry to donate to Beads of Courage. Please read the information about this important charity below.

This year the RMBS will be donating to Beads of Courage. This is an incredible nonprofit organization that helps children cope with their cancer treatments. A pediatric oncology nurse came up with the idea while working at Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang summer camps. She noticed campers of all ages love beading, it makes them feel good. Hoping beads would cheer up young cancer patients in hospitals, she founded Beads of Courage in 2004.

Children who participate receive colored beads that represent milestones, procedures, and acts of bravery. For instance, they get a yellow bead for an overnight stay, a white bead for chemotherapy, and a glow-in-the-dark bead for radiation treatment. Children can amass 10, 20, even 35 feet of beads. Some read their beads like a book. It is a simple but powerful way to remember their courageous journey.

Beads of Courage would love for us to provide completed jewelry pieces they can auction for fundraising. They would also like hand made lamp work and polymer clay beads for the kids. Please open your hearts to this great charity and feel free to provide either a completed piece and or some hand made lamp work or polymer clay beads for the kids! Please bring your completed pieces and beads to our Bead and Share night at the October meeting. Include a business card if you like as the pieces will be displayed and auctioned off throughout the year at Beads of Courage auctions. We will display your completed works at the meeting that night and then send them off to Beads of Courage.
Thanks to Linda Talley for researching this charity!

We will showcase your completed pieces at the October meeting and hope that you’ll join your fellow members to bead together and donate. Please include your card as the pieces will be auctioned off at a Beads of Courage Charity Events throughout the year.

2) The RMBS Book Table will be conducting a large end-of-the-year book, DVD and tool SALE with the lowest prices possible for all members.

3) We will have tables setup to enable you to bead together for a couple of hours with your fellow members. Relax, catch up on the latest as refreshments will start at 6:00 p.m.

4) Members will vote on the nominated Board of Directors candidates. As we stated at the August meeting, please let us know if you are interested in a role! Click here to view the job description information.

If you have questions about the October meeting or the events mentioned above, please contact Terry Evans, Program Chairperson via email: programs@rockybeads.org

Jeannette Cook – Terrific PoP Bead Toggle

It is almost magic the way this ingenious little toggle works. A Peyote casing is custom fit to a smooth round bead. Pop the bead in, toggle it sideways and it is a secure toggle clasp. With a twist of the bead, PoP it out and viola, the toggle opens. Using a larger bead for the center gives us the chance to play with more embellishing techniques on the surface.

Deluxe Pop Bead Toggle
Where: Tactile

  • RMBS Member Class Fee: $28.00
  • Non-Member Class Fee: $63.00
  •  Optional Kit Fee: $38
Register Here

Students will not complete this project in class, but will have the skills and the directions to finish all the steps at home.

Supplies:
Delicas, tear drop shaped beads, 3 sizes of seed beads, your choice of colors and a center bead. Size 12 beading needles and Fireline size 6 lb test. Bring all your usual beading tools, ie. Scissors, wax, thread burner beading surface, task light, etc.

For the Center Bead
It must have a hole large enough to pass size .024 Softflex® wire through twice. This is important for stringing the bead into a necklace. I like to use Lucite beads. Glass beads will work if they are perfectly spherical.  Some semi precious stone beads have a big enough hole, but not many in my experience.

Please let us know your experience level at registration so we can include you in that mini workshop. There will be no charge for the mini workshop. Larkin Van Horn – Beaded Buttons

A great way to use up leftovers from larger projects, and small enough to carry when you travel. Beaded buttons can embellish a garment, wall hanging or home decor project. All it takes is a few beads, a button form, a scrap of fabric and your imagination. A very easy introduction to the world of bead embroidery.

  • Time: 1:00p – 4:00p

You will be permitted to photograph my samples for your own use, but not for publication in any form.

Larkin Van Horn – Talismans/Hues and Clues

This class will focus on understanding and using the meanings of color, shape, and symbols, both personal and universal, to create artwork with meaning, spirit, emotion, and personal resonance.  Applying this information to whatever your art form may be, will allow you to create personally meaningful art, while using symbols that can be universally recognizable.

  • When: Saturday May 19, 2012
  • Time: 9:00a – Noon
  • Where: TACtile Arts
  • Skill Level: Everyone
  • 3 class hours
  • Member Class Fee: $30 – includes kit fee

Supply List:

  • 1in deep three ring binder (all handouts will be punched, and this will keep things tidy)
  • Your sketching tools of choice (pencils, pens, crayons, colored pencils, etc.)
  • Assemble the materials for a project you wish to make.  In the three hour session, there probably won’t be time to actually start work on the project, but having the materials around you will help you focus on the things we will be discussing.
  • Choose colors that appeal to you, and perhaps a few that don’t.
  • Optional:  task lamp and extension cord

You will be permitted to photograph my samples for your own use, but not for publication in any form.

Larkin Van Horn – Tiny Beaded Vessels

Using bead embroidery stitches, students will create a small, encrusted treasure. The three or four sided vessel will be in their own chosen color scheme. Charms, buttons, or small cabochons may be used as the focal point on one or all sides of the vessel. The class will focus on beading stitches, color, and design as well as the construction of the vessel.

  • When: Sunday May 20, 2012
  • Time: 9:00a – 4:00p
  • Where: TACtile Arts
  • Skill Level: Confident Beginner
  • 6 class hours
  • Member Class Fee: $60 – includes kit fee
  • Non-Member Fee: $70

Supply List:

  • small sharp scissors
  • fabric scissors
  • paper scissors
  • cloth mat for the table
  • task light and extension cord (optional)
  • beading needle (size 10, 11 or 12, as you wish)
  • beading thread (Nymo, Silamide, C-Lon, SuperLon, Fireline, as you wish) ***
  • 6” x 15” fabric that blends with bead colors (quilters cotton is a good weight)
  • colored pencils (optional)

Beads:  You will want a variety of colors, shades and finishes to make this piece more interesting.  Even if working in a monochromatic color scheme, go for some variety.  Choose also a variety of shapes for this project – seed beads in several sizes, bugle beads, cubes, triangles, hexes, rondelles, and specialty shapes.  You may also want to consider using a larger focal bead, cabochon or charm on one or more sides of the vessel.

*** I prefer to work with thread that comes close to the colors of the beads I am using.  If you want to use metal charms or crystals, be sure to bring some Fireline 6 or 8 lb. test, as these tend to cut through regular beading thread.

You will be permitted to photograph my samples for your own use, but not for publication in any form.

Larkin Van Horn – Beaded Cuffs

Make an elaborately beaded bracelet that wraps around your wrist like the cuff of a well tailored shirt. This project will expand your design, color and beading skills, allowing you to create a wearable work of art. The cuff is sized to fit your wrist, and the pattern provided can be adjusted to allow you to make a beaded cuff as a gift.  The class will focus on design, color, finishing, and altering the basic shape, as well as stitch techniques.

  • When: Friday May 18, 2012
  • Time: 9:00a – 4:00p
  • Where: TACtile Arts
  • Skill Level: Confident Beginner
  • 6 class hours
  • Member Class Fee: $60 – includes kit fee
  • Non-Member Fee: $70

Supply List:

  • Beading Needles and thread to match beads
  • Small, sharp scissors
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pencil/pen
  • Three 1/2” garment snaps
  • Fabric:  4” x 18”  (quilter’s cotton is a good weight for this)  The fabric  color should blend with your bead selection.
  • Ultrasuede will be used to line the cuff, and you may purchase this after you are finished beading, if you wish.  You won’t finish the beading in class, but we will cover finishing techniques in class.
  • Task Light and Extension Cord (optional)

Beads:  Choose your color scheme and then start collecting your beads.  Include a good variety of size and shape, including several colors, shades, and finishes of seed and bugle beads, some larger beads like cubes and rondelles, some crystals for sparkle, etcetera.  Keep your selection to scale for a bracelet.  Consider including a cabochon, or several, as focal points for your cuff.  For this project, cabochons should not exceed 1-1/4” in diameter, so the cuff will curve easily around the arm.

You will be permitted to photograph my samples for your own use, but not for publication in any form.

2012 RMBS Bead Sampler

This year we are going to have classes set up a little differently. We’ll start earlier and have more sessions offered. We’ll also have students and teachers bring a sack lunch so that we can have a class during the lunch time. We want to ensure each teacher gets time off to take a class or just take a break.
